WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko defeated Albert “The Dragon” Sosnowski by a 10th-round knockout Saturday at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs), a Ukrainian who has the highest knockout percentage of any heavyweight champion ever (95 percent), simply destroyed the overmatched, and undersized, native or Poland from the outset of the bout.
“I am very happy to have defended my title. I had really good preparation and was in top-form,” said Klitschko, 38, who has never been knocked to the canvas in his professional career. “I saw that he is still young and made some mistakes and I took advantage of them.”
Sosnowski (45-3, 27 KOs) called Klitschko “a great fighter.”
“I gave everything I had today,” said Sosnowski, 31. “But he kept pressuring me and I was tired. I could have kept boxing but in the next round I would have lost probably.”
Klitshcko’s only two losses came controversially at the hands of Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 KOs) in June 2003 and Chris Byrd (40-6-1, 22 KOs) in April 2000.
“Dr. Iron Fist” has publicly stated that he intends to hang-up his gloves at the conclusion of this year.
Klitschko is a very good fighter and he will rightfully be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016.
So, how in the world does an elite pugilist like Klitschko not have the penultimate defense of his heavyweight crown aired anywhere on television?
“Boxing sucks,” said Brad Sherwood, 29, a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym in Medford. “I’m just looking forward to Brock Lesnar’s fight in July.”
Boxing yet again suffered a self-inflicted black-eye this past weekend.
