The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 12-3 Tuesday night at the New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx to earn their 16th victory in 20 games.

A.J Burnett (4-2, 4.69 ERA), 32, pitched seven solid innings and yielded a measly three earned runs as the Bombers advanced to 10 games above .500.

The Bombers, who at 31-21 have the best record in the American League, had played a Major League Baseball record 18 consecutive errorless games before catcher Jorge Posada committed an errant throw from the plate in the 4th inning last night.

"Obviously there was going to be another error at some point, but I think the consistency of your defense can play the whole season,” said Yankees Manager Joe Girardi.

“A lot of it is mental preparation, I believe, and physical preparation. Defense is one of those things that you can control, a lot better than maybe some of the other parts of the game."

The 5 Best Overall Selections in the MLB  Draft Since 1984

The Washington Nationals selected San Diego State University pitching sensation Stephen Strasburg (13-1, 1.32 ERA), 20, with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday at the MLB Network Studios in Seacaucus, N.J.

In recognition of the draft, I decided to rank the five most accomplished players selected first overall in the past quarter century.

1)      Ken Griffey, Jr.

After Griffey, 39, completed his stellar high school career at Archbishop Moeller High School in Ohio where he was named his league’s Player of the Year in both the 1986 and 1987 seasons,“The Kid” was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the first overall pick in the 1987 amateur draft.

The New York Yankees destroyed the New York Metropolitans 15-0 Sunday in the Bronx to win two out of the three games played during this weekend’s first installment of the 2009 Subway Series.

The lopsided victory was the biggest blowout between the cross-town rivals since the inception of interleague league play in 1997 and it was the Bombers largest margin of victory since they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 21-4 in 2007.

Yankees right-hander A.J. Burnett (5-3, 4.46 ERA) struck-out eight Mets batters and allowed only four singles in seven innings as the Bombers embarrassed their Queens counterpart.

"I felt in sync the whole game. I was free out there," said Burnett, 32. "I was just letting it go."

On the flipside, Mets Ace and two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana (8-4, 3.29 ERA) struggled mightily as he yielded nine earned runs in three horrid innings.

Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto defeated Joshua Clottey via split decision to successfully defend his WBO welterweight title Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

In the first round, Cotto (34-1) landed a solid jab that floored Clottey (35-3) and the reigning champion seemed destined to easily control the contest in front of his many supporters who attended the card on the eve of the Puerto Rican Parade.

However, the entire bout was altered in the third round when Clottey, 32, accidentally head-butted Cotto, 28, and opened a severe laceration over the titleholders left eye.

With blood profusely flowing from his wound for the remainder of the fight, Cotto exhibited tremendous grit, determination and courage and he was able to withstand Clottey's relentless assaults despite his injury.

Ron Harper announced earlier this week that his prodigious son, Bryce, will forego his final two years of high school eligibility to pursue a professional baseball career.

Bryce, 16, who was the first high school sophomore to be named a first team All-American by Baseball America and has been called “the Lebron James of baseball” by Sports Illustrated, will take classes at the College of Southern Nevada over the summer and receive his GED in the fall.

If everything goes as projected, Bryce would be eligible for the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft and most analysts predict that he will be selected with the first overall pick by the Washington Nationals.

Harper, a catcher who batted .626 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI’s in 2009 for the Las Vegas High School Wildcats, is an unquestioned physical marvel and he has a legitimate chance to flourish one day in the professional ranks.

The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to pick former Oklahoma Sooners star Blake Griffin Thursday with the first overall selection in the 2009 NBA Draft at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

However, there is not a consensus projection for the No. 2 pick and basketball analysts remain largely uncertain who the Memphis Grizzlies will choose tomorrow in Gotham.

In recognition of the NBA Draft, I have decided to rank the five most accomplished players selected second overall in the past quarter century.

1)  Jason Kidd

Kidd, 36, attended the University of California and helped resurrect the Golden Bears dormant basketball program with his stellar play at the point guard position.

After being honored as a First Team All-American as a sophomore, Kidd declared for the NBA Draft and was selected second overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1994.

The New York Times reported last week that former Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa was on a list of 103 players who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003.

Sosa, 40, a 7-time All-Star selection and 6-time Silver Slugger Award winner, helped revitalize the game of baseball in 1998 when he and fellow juicehead Mark McGwire pursued Roger Maris’ home run record.

“Slamming Sammy,” who won the 1998 NL MVP and ultimately broke Maris’ mark when he finished that season with 66 home runs, has long been rumored to have abused anabolic steroids during his playing career.

The native of the Dominican Republic is simply the latest name in a growing list of Major League Baseball superstars to be publicly exposed as a charlatan.

In last night’s 2009 Subway Series finale at Citi Field in Queens, the New York Yankees defeated the New York Metropolitans 4-2 to capture five out of the six games played between the cross-town rivals this year.

Erstwhile Yankees ace pitcher Chien-Ming Wang (1-6, 10.06 ERA) yielded two runs on four hits over 5-1/3 innings to earn his first victory since he suffered a season-ending foot injury running the bases in Houston against the Astros last June.

Wang, 29, entered the season with a .754 winning percentage (46-15) that was the best mark among active hurlers from 2006-2008 with a minimum of 60 starts.

However, Wang’s severely fractured foot was clearly not entirely healed at the start of the 2009 campaign and his putrid numbers emphasized that reality. In his first three starts, Wang went 0-3 and compiled an unsightly 34.50 ERA before he was placed on the disabled list in late-April.

Former WWE and ECW champion Bobby “The Dominator” Lashley pulverized mixed martial arts veteran fighter Bob “The Beast” Sapp via TKO less than two minutes into their bout Saturday night at “Ultimate Chaos” in Biloxi, Miss.

Moments after the opening bell rang, Lashley (4-0) easily grappled the enormous Sapp (10-5-1) to the canvas.

Once Lashley, 32, seized the advantage, he connected with a vicious barrage of punches on Sapp, 35, until the onetime PRIDE and K-1 star tapped the mat to signal to the referee that he wanted the fight called at 1:17 of the first round.

"I got a good shot in the eye and was unable to see," explained the onetime University of Washington offensive lineman who was chosen by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft. "He got me in the eye. No excuses, He got me down today and controlled it. Give it up to Bobby Lashley."
