The United Football League (UFL) is scheduled to begin their inaugural season on October 8, 2009.

The upstart league will have four teams competing in seven cities and games will be played on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

The four teams selected to compete in 2009 are the California Redwoods, the Florida Huskers, the Las Vegas Locomotives and the New York Sentinels.

A championship game is slated to occur on Thanksgiving weekend.

Largely because of the current economic state, many prospective owners decided to initially refrain from establishing a franchise.

However, if the UFL experiences some measure of success this autumn, and if the economy does improve, those hesitant owners have expressed interest in expanding the league.

New York Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace will not play in Sunday’s season opener versus the Texans in Houston because he was suspended for four games in July for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances.

In an effort to maintain his strength and conditioning while he is banished until week five against the Miami Dolphins, Pace, 28, decided to travel to Las Vegas to train for two weeks with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) legend Randy Couture.

“The Reason why I’m doing MMA is it’s probably the closest thing you can find to football as far as conditioning, cardiovascular and the physical aspect,” said Pace, who signed a six-year contract with the Jets worth $42 million in 2008. “I’m not going to be fighting and I’m not going to get hit. I’m just going to be training my behind off.”

Greg Paulus made his debut as a collegiate quarterback Saturday for Syracuse University and the former Duke University point guard nearly led the Orange to an upset win over the University of Minnesota before the Golden Gophers escaped the Carrier Dome with a 23-20 victory in overtime.

Paulus, 23, who graduated early from Duke and received an NCAA waiver to play football for the Orange as a graduate student, completed 19 of 31 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown after four years removed from the gridiron.

“If Paulus had been playing football all this time, obviously he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the country,” proclaimed Minnesota Coach Tim Brewster.

New Syracuse Head Coach Doug Marrone devised a conservative game plan for Paulus that relied mainly on screen passes and quick out-patterns.

Famed ESPN college basketball sportscaster Dick Vitale has decided to pay the costs of a cemetery plot for a high school student who was inexplicably murdered last week outside of Southeast High in Bradenton, Fla.

According to authorities, Daniel Floyd Williams, 18, approached a vehicle idled in the school’s parking lot with four girls inside of it and asked for one of the females to give him a Lewinsky.

The girls flatly denied Williams’ lewd request for fellatio. Williams momentarily retreated before he walked back, pulled out a gun and fired four shots at the car.

Jasmine Thompson, a 17-year-old cheerleader who planned to study criminal law in college, was struck by one of the bullets and she died almost instantly from her wound.

“Here’s a 17-year-old girl, Jasmine Thompson, who really did nothing wrong in her life except for being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Vitale, 70, told the New York Daily News last week.

New York Yankees icon Derek Jeter moved past Lou Gehrig on the Bombers all-time hits list on 9-11 with a single to right field in the Bronx.

“It’s still hard to believe,” said Jeter, 35, who has recorded 2,727 career hits since he made his debut with the Yankees in 1995. “Being a Yankee fan, this is something I never imagined. Your dream is always to play for the team, and once you get here, you just want to stay and be consistent. This wasn’t a part of it. This whole experience has been overwhelming.”

Ailing Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner issued a statement congratulating Jeter on the amazing feats he has accomplished since he first donned pinstripes.

“For those who say today’s game can’t produce legendary players, I have two words: Derek Jeter,” Steinbrenner said of the three-time Gold Glove Award winner at shortstop who played a vital role in the Yankees last four championships.

Former undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is slated to fight Mexican bruiser and current WBA and WBO Lightweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez Saturday night at the MGM Grand arena in Las Vegas.

The fight was initially scheduled to occur this past summer until Mayweather (39-0, 25 Knockouts) was forced to postpone the contest because of a rib injury he suffered while training for the bout.
Mayweather, 32, has not fought since he retired after he decisively TKO'd  Englishman Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton (45-2, 32 Knockouts) in the 10th round of their December 2007 prizefight.
Marquez (50-4-1, 37 knockouts), only the fourth Mexican boxer to become a world champion in three different weight classes, is a tough and formidable pugilist and he will prove to be a worthy opponent for Mayweather this weekend.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. dominated a physically overmatched Juan Manuel Marquez to earn a decisive unanimous decision victory Saturday night at the MGM Grand arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 knockouts), who was fined $600,000 for failing to meet the sanctioned weight for Saturday’s bout by four pounds, returned from a 21-month layoff and looked as sharp as he ever did in the ring.

“I’ve been off for two years, so I felt like it took me a couple of rounds to really know I was back in the ring again,” said Mayweather, 32, who landed an astounding 290 of his 493 punches (59 percent) during the contest. “I know I’ll get better.”

Considering the supreme pugilistic mastery that Mayweather displayed this past weekend, it is hard to believe that he can possibly continue to “get better.”

The New York Jets bruised and bullied the New England Patriots to earn a 16-9 victory Sunday at the Meadowlands to maintain their standing atop of the AFC East.

The Jets (2-0), who have not surrendered a defensive touchdown to date, are slated to host the Tennessee Titans (0-2) Sunday afternoon.

“This is where we expected to be,” solid wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said after Sunday’s game. “The entire offseason we were working hard to be 2-0 at this point.”

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (23-47, 216 yards) struggled all afternoon against the Jets savage and ferocious pass rush.

“Our defense is just filled with studs,” Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez remarked. “I felt for Tom.”

Brady failed to complete at least half of his pass attempts for only the second time since 2006.

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko will defend his title against Mexican-American Cristobal “Nightmare” Arreola at the Staples Center in Los Angeles Saturday night.

Arreola (27-0, 24 knockouts), who hails from nearby Riverside, Calif., will attempt to become the first heavyweight champion of Mexican descent in front of a crowd that will inevitably be supporting his every move throughout the night.

“I’m going to make him a pop-culture question,” Arreola, 28, said of Klitschko (37-2, 36 knockouts). “’Who did Cris Arreola beat to become the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion of the world?’ I’m honored by this, and it’s not just the opportunity. It’s history. It’s hard for me to even describe.”

WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko successfully defended his title with a 10th round TKO of promising contender Cris “Nightmare” Arreola Saturday night at the Staples center in Los Angeles.

From the outset, Klitschko (38-2, 36 knockouts) controlled the tempo of the fight and quickly erased any hopes the crowd had that Arreola, 28, from nearby Riverside, Calif., could compete with “Dr. Iron Fist.”

Klitschko, 38, utterly dominated the action and the gory contest was mercifully halted before the start of the 11th round when Arreola’s trainer refused to allow him to continue.

“He was taking too much punishment,” trainer Henry Ramirez said of Arreola (27-1, 24 knockouts), who had his nose broken in the 9th round. “When I told him I was going to stop the fight he was irate.”

Sixteen years after their first fight, Roy Jones, Jr. and Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins tentatively agreed last week to a rematch that is expected to occur sometime in early-2010.

“Sixteen years ago they fought each other and went on and made history in their own way,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, Hopkins promoter. “Each one is considered today as ring royalty. That’s why I think when those two guys are going to fight it will determine who will be the king of the ring.”

In May of 1993, Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 knockouts) lost to Jones (54-5, 40 knockouts) by a unanimous decision for the vacant IBF middleweight belt.

Since their last encounter in the ring, Jones, 40, and Hopkins, 44, have become two of the most accomplished fighters in boxing history.

The New York Jets and their Head Coach Rex Ryan defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17 Sunday in a rain-soaked contest at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (17-30, 171 yards) became the first rookie signal-caller in NFL history to lead his team to a 3-0 start.

“When Sanchez is playing at the top of his game and the defense is playing like they are, and special teams doing what we do, we’re unstoppable,” said Wallace Wright, a key performer on the Jets special teams unit. “We definitely feel we are the team to beat.”

The Jets believe that they are “the team to beat” because Ryan, 46, has instilled a swagger and genuine confidence in his players that has translated into victories on the gridiron.
