Disdainful Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens responded Sunday to comments made by former New England Patriots star Rodney Harrison via Twitter after Owens failed to catch a pass for the first time in 185 games.

Earlier this season, Harrison, 36, a two-time Pro Bowl selection who earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots, expressed his contempt for Owens during an interview on WEEI’s The Dale and Holley Show.

Prior to Harrison’s interview on WEEI, Owens, 35, a five-time All-Pro selection, had again ridiculed the Patriots for the Spygate controversy in the days leading to the Bills season-opener in Foxboro.

“I’m so pumped about T.O. opening up his big mouth about the Patriots,” said Harrison, the only player in NFL history to record both 30 sacks and 30 interceptions. “I can actually put a bounty on T.O. if I wanted and not get in any trouble.”

Provided that Evander “the Real Deal” Holyfield wins his upcoming bout in November, the legendary heavyweight boxer will be considered as a possible opponent for reigning WBC champion Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko sometime in 2010.

“I believe that Evander Holyfield is one of the best heavyweight fighters of the last quarter century,” WBC President Jose Sulaiman told FanHouse on Monday night. “Everybody in China, Korea, Japan and all of Asia, they talk very highly of Evander Holyfield.”

Holyfield (42-10-2, 27 KOs) is expected to fight Derrick Rossy (22-2, 12 KOs) of Medford, New York on November 8 in Jeju Island, South Korea.

“So if Evander comes in and has a good showing in the fight that takes place in Jeju, I think that Klitschko might take a fight with him,” said Sulaiman.

WBO and WBC middleweight champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik will defend his titles against reigning two-time WBO welterweight champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams on December 5 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The fight was initially scheduled to occur last Saturday night. However, the bout was postponed due to a staph infection in Pavlik’s hand.

Pavlik (35-1, 31Kos) underwent two separate operations to heal his bummed hand and he said he is physically prepared to face the lanky Williams (37-1, 27 KOs).

“I still have a lot to prove,” said Pavlik, 27, a native of Youngstown, Ohio. “Even after the Williams fight, a dominant performance, there still will be a lot to prove.”

Pavlik, who is still trained by relative unknown Jack Loew of Youngstown’s South Side Boxing Gym, was the talk of the boxing world after he viciously destroyed Jermain Taylor to win his crowns in September 2007.

Notre Dame junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen completed 23-of-31 passes and threw for a career-high 422 yards in Saturday’s thrilling 37-30 overtime victory against the University of Washington in South Bend.

“He played a terrific game,” Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian said of Clausen, 22, who was named the Davey O’Brien Foundation Quarterback of the Week for his stellar performance last weekend.

“There weren’t very many things that were just clean for him in the pocket. A lot of what he did was when pressure came, he was able to avoid the rush, buy time, kept his vision extremely well and made lots of plays down the field.”

Clausen, the signal-caller with the best passing efficiency rating in the country (179.3), has become a frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy because of the ability he has shown to flourish on the gridiron during pressure situations this autumn.

Geriatric quarterback Brett Favre helped the Minnesota Vikings defeat his estranged team, the Green Bay Packers, 30-23 Monday Night at the Metrodome.

Favre, 40, played brilliantly against his rivals as he completed 24 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite his claims to the contrary, there is zero question that Favre returned to play an 18th season in the NFL primarily to exact revenge on the Packers for their decision to trade him to the New York Jets last August.

After years of being held hostage by Favre in the offseason, Green Bay’s brass finally tired of his wavering and they decided that the time had arrived to let backup signal-caller Aaron Rodgers, 25, lead their franchise.

Favre, a Green Bay icon who has essentially set every NFL passing record imaginable, was for the first time since 1992 no longer the face of the storied franchise.

Former junior welterweight champion Roger “Black Mamba” Mayweather had a warrant issued for his arrest last week after he failed to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court to face charges of battery and coercion.

Mayweather, 48, who held two major world titles in two different weight classes, is accused of attacking Melissa St. Vil, a female boxer he once trained, last August.

Mayweather (59-13, 35 KOs) is alleged to have struck Vil several times in her ribs before he maliciously choked her at an apartment that he owns and was renting out.

According to police reports, the uncle of boxing superstar Floyd “Money” Mayweather strangled Vil with such violent force that she coughed-up blood when authorities arrived at the crime scene.

Undefeated welterweight boxer Floyd “Money” Mayweather visited the New York Jets practice facility Thursday at Florham Park, N.J.

The Jets invited Mayweather to their practice and he arrived with a slew of his flunkies before he addressed the team.

The main advice Mayweather offered the Jets was to not allow their loss last Sunday to the Saints in New Orleans to hinder their preparation for Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

“This is my first time coming to an NFL training camp,” said Mayweather, 32, the winner of six world boxing championships in five different weight classes. “I’ve bet enough money on them.”

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) endorsed the trade the Jets made this week to acquire disgruntled wide receiver Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns and he predicted that Gang Green are legitimate contenders to win the Super Bowl this year.

Today our nation celebrates the life of famed navigator and explorer Christopher Columbus and his voyage in 1492 that resulted in the discovery of the Americas.

Although Columbus sailed for the rulers of Spain, he is widely regarded as an Italian because he was born in the Italian city of Genoa in 1451.

With Columbus and his vast achievements in mind, I wondered who the greatest sports figure of Italian origin was in history.

It quickly became apparent that no individual of Italian descent accomplished more in the world of athletics than Rocky Marciano did.

Marciano was born named Rocco Francis Marchegiano in Brockton, Massachusetts to Italian immigrants Pierino Marchegiano and Pasqualina Picciuto.

Marciano, known as “The Brockton Blockbuster,” remains the only heavyweight champion in boxing history to retire having won every fight in his professional career with an unblemished record of 49-0.

The Miami Dolphins physically outmuscled the New York Jets and earned a 31-27 victory Monday night at Land Shark Stadium in Florida.

“First off, it was a complete embarrassment by our defense and by me,” said Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan to the New York Daily News. “Obviously, we need to prepare better. I didn’t have the defense prepared the way they should have been, and I take full responsibility for that.”

Ryan, whose hyped defense surrendered a total of 151 yards rushing and allowed Miami to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone, was not finished expressing his utter disgust.

“I’ve been involved in some bad defensive performances, but I’ve never been involved in one as bad as this.”

Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament will begin this Saturday night when WBC champion Carl Froch defends his title against Andre Dirrell in Nottingham, England, and Jermain Taylor faces “King” Arthur Abraham in Berlin, Germany.

On November 21, the two remaining participants in the scheduled 18-month campaign to crown a new 168-pound super middleweight champion, Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KOs) and Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KOs), are set to battle in Oakland, California.

It was reportedly a complicated and difficult task to get five promoters to agree to, and accept the terms of, the tournament format.

“To find common ground between two promoters is a challenge,” Showtime Senior Vice President Ken Hershman told CNNSI.com. “To find it among five is an insane challenge.”

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will host the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans Saturday afternoon in South Bend.

Notre Dame (4-1) currently has a seven-game losing streak to USC (4-1) and they have been humiliated by the Trojans in their last two contests by a combined score of 76-3.

“I think that our university really, really could use this win,” Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis said in the understatement of this millennium.

The portly Weis, 53, who was given $40 million and a five-year contract to coach the Irish, has been roundly criticized for the ineptitude he has displayed on the sidelines since he was hired by Notre Dame in 2004.

Weis, whose Irish are currently ranked #25 in the nation, lost a school record 15 games over a span of two seasons in 2007 and 2008 and he has been defeated in his last six consecutive contests against top-10 teams.

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson said Monday during an interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” that his deceased 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, was “my angel.”

Tyson claimed that he did not want to be provided full details of her death because, “if somebody’s to blame for it, there will be a problem.”

Last May, Exodus died at Phoenix’s St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center after she suffered a terrible accident playing on an exercise treadmill at her home.

According to reports, Exodus was discovered by her seven-year-old brother, Miguel, unconscious and tangled in a cord.

Miguel found their mother who untangled Exodus and administered CPR on her child before she called for medical attention.

Exodus was immediately placed on life support in the hospital until she succumbed to her injuries the following afternoon.

The Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament began Saturday night in two separate European states.

In the opening bout of the tournament, “King” Arthur Abraham brutally knocked out Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor with six seconds remaining in the 12th round at O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany.

Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs) dominated Taylor (28-4-1, 17 KOs) from the outset and he would have easily won the match via decision had he not flattened the native of Arkansas during the fight’s waning moments with a straight right-hand to the chin.

Taylor, 31, has now lost four out of his last five fights and it is apparent that he is more spent at this juncture of his career than a 65-year-old prostitute.

It is readily evident that the beatings Taylor suffered at the hands of Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31KOs) have badly diminished his physical capabilities and it is time for the 2000 bronze medalist to seriously consider hanging up his gloves.

Last April, Arizona Senator John McCain and Long Island GOP Representative Pete King asked the first African-American President in United States history to grant the original black Heavyweight Champion of the World a posthumous pardon for his racially motivated 1913 conviction for violation of the Mann Act.

The lawmakers' request was inspired by Ken Burns’ documentary Unforgivable Blackness on boxing legend Jack Johnson.

“For more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and notorious African-American on earth,” said Burns of the pugilist who completed his career with 89 wins and a measly 2 losses and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954.

“This was a man who Muhammad Ali emulated,” Burns continued. “But Muhammad Ali did his fighting in a decade dedicated to civil rights. Jack Johnson did it in a decade in which more African Americans were lynched than at any other time.”

Former two-time WBA World Heavyweight champion John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz visited Boston Thursday to donate boxing equipment to the South Boston Boxing Club after the gym was burglarized in early-September.

“The main reason I came here today is my brother (Eddie, a coach at the South Boston Boxing Club) told me what happened at this gym and how everything had been taken,” said Ruiz, 37, a Puerto Rican-American who was born in nearby Methuen, MA. “I was taken aback by what happened here. I couldn’t understand how anybody could do that to kids. I really can’t put how I felt into words. It’s time to move forward though. I wanted to do what I could to help the gym and the kids.”

Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), who currently resides in Las Vegas, was at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut last week where he served as a special guest at the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians annual convention and awards night.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans 34-27 Saturday afternoon in South Bend.

The Irish appeared to be on the cusp of being blown-out when Trojans running back Joe McKnight scored to make it a 34-14 game with only thirteen minutes remaining in regulation.

However, instead of going into the fetal position, Notre Dame (4-2) valiantly battled back and cut the deficit to one touchdown.

Unfortunately for fans of the Irish, that is as close as Notre Dame would come to defeating USC (5-1) for the first time in eight attempts.

“Anybody who says there’s no fight in the Fighting Irish is missing the boat,” said embattled Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis, 53, who was given $40 million and a five-year contract to coach the Irish.

The New York Yankees bludgeoned the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 10-1 in Game 4 of the ALCS Tuesday night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim to move within one victory of their first trip to the World Series since the 2003 season.

Yankees ace lefthander C.C. Sabathia allowed only one run on five hits and two walks over eight stellar innings to help New York take a commanding 3-1 lead over the Angels in the best-of-seven series.

“He was spectacular again,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said of Sabathia, who is now 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his three postseason starts this year. “To be able to shut this club down like he did, again, is no easy feat.”

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia agreed with Girardi’s assessment.

“Game 1 and this game, C.C. is the story,” said Scioscia of the 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner who went 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA this year. “He pitched a terrific game for them.”

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez was showering when Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit a double to win Game Four of the NLCS 5-4 Monday at Dodger Stadium.

“I was taking a shower,” said Ramirez, 37, a 12-time All-Star selection and nine-time Silver Slugger Award winner. “I came out and saw it on television. Then everybody started coming in and they turned the television off.”

Dodgers Manager Joe Torre decided to remove Ramirez from the outfield for defensive replacement Juan Pierre in the ninth inning.

Torre, who has inexplicably become friendly with his star hitter, admitted that Ramirez should not have deserted his teammates in such a crucial moment of the season.

“It probably doesn’t look good,” Torre said.

Ukrainian WBC heavyweight champion Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko is scheduled to defend his crown against undefeated challenger Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson on December 12 at the PostFinance-Arena in Bern, Switzerland.

Klitschko (38-2, 37 KOs), the owner of the highest knockout percentage (92.5%) of any heavyweight boxing champion ever, badly bludgeoned Cris Arreola (27-1, 24 KOs) last month in Los Angeles before the product of Riverside’s corner stopped the fight after the conclusion of the 10th round.

When the active Klitschko, 38, scraps Johnson (22-0-1, 9 KOs) in a couple of months, it will be the third time he has fought in this calendar year alone.

“I feel top fit, had super preparations in Los Angeles and really enjoyed the fight against Arreola,” said Klitschko, the first professional boxing world champion to hold a PH. D.

The much-hyped Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament began last Saturday night in two separate European states with “King” Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch winning their respective bouts to commence the unique event.

The tournament was primarily established to anoint a new champion in the super middleweight division after its longtime titlist, Joe Calzaghe, relinquished his crowns in 2007 and ultimately retired in February 2009.

The finals of the World Boxing Classic tournament are expected to occur sometime in May or June 2011.

Many fans of the Sweet Science are already clamoring for a matchup that would pit the former champion Calzaghe against the winner of this unprecedented tournament.

Unfortunately, Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) has made it emphatically clear that he would rather become infected with herpes than return to the ring to face the winner of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.

Lefthander Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5-2 Sunday night in the Bronx to capture their 40th American League Pennant.

Pettitte, 37, a two-time All-Star selection who has accumulated the most victories of any MLB pitcher since 1995, allowed only seven hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.

“He did what he has done his whole career,” said Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter of the 2001 ALCS MVP.

The native of Texas is set to make his eighth appearance in the World Series when the Yankees host the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday evening.

Many onlookers have long considered Pettitte to be a serviceable pitcher who is not among baseball’s elite hurlers.

Those skeptics are simply incorrect.

In a battle between famed Polish fighters, Tomasz “Granite Chin” Adamek defeated Andrew Golota by TKO in the fifth round to capture the IBF International Heavyweight Title Saturday night at the Arena Lodz in Poland.

Adamek (39-1, 27 KOs) utilized his vastly superior speed to absolutely dominate Golota (41-8-1, 33 KOs) until American referee Bill Clancy rescued the beaten pugilist from absorbing any further punishment.

Golota, 41, had a celebrated amateur career that saw him emerge victorious 111 times and he earned the bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

At his focused best, Golota displayed tremendous power in the ring and he was a legitimate heavyweight prospect in the mid-1990’s.

The New York Jets destroyed the putrid Oakland Raiders 38-0 Sunday afternoon at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Unfortunately for New York (4-3), their dominating triumph came at a great expense.

One week after the Jets lost defensive standout Kris Jenkins for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, offensive sparkplug Leon Washington fractured his right fibula on his first carry of the game.

Washington, 27, a 2008 Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, had his lower leg snapped when he was tackled by Raiders defenders and the broken bone grotesquely pierced his skin.

“I could see blood spurting out,” said one player of Washington’s compound fracture. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Running back Thomas Jones, who had shared carries with Washington in the backfield to date, said the Jets as a team are demoralized by the loss.

Wide receiver Miles Austin helped lead the Dallas Cowboys to a 37-21 victory over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Austin, 25, an undrafted free-agent from Monmouth University in New Jersey, had eight receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys improved their record to 4-2.

The previous week, Miles established the Cowboys franchise record for receiving yards in game with 250 in a 26-20 overtime win versus the Chiefs in Kansas City and he now has caught 21 passes for 502 yards and five touchdowns to date in this 2009 season.

Austin was a standout athlete at Garfield High School in the "Garden State" where he lettered in football, basketball and track and field.

Despite being honored as a high school senior on the gridiron with All-Bergen County and All-State honors, Austin did not garner much interest from major college football programs.

The Halloween weekend is finally upon us.

As a tribute to the annual “Fright Night” holiday, I decided to rank the three scariest fighters in the annals of boxing.

Please note that the below list is comprised of the “scariest” and most menacing pugilists to ever enter the ring.

Hence, this is NOT a tabulation of the three most skilled or accomplished fighters in the history of “The Sweet Science.”

Without further adieu, below are my rankings.

1)      “Iron” Mike Tyson-  Tyson (50-6, 44 KOS) became at the age of 20 the youngest man to ever win the WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight titles.

In November 1986, Tyson savagely defeated Trevor Berbick by a TKO in the second round to capture the WBC title.
