Nearly two decades after their first matchup, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins easily avenged his loss to Roy Jones Jr. by a lopsided unanimous decision victory Saturday night at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs), the oldest man ever to hold the middleweight championship in professional boxing, badly outclassed the famous graybeard formerly known as “Junior” (54-7, 40 KOs).

Despite Jones’ devious and purposely illegal tactics in the ring, Hopkins cruised to his fifth win in six fights since 2005 and he cemented his legacy as the greatest pugilist over 40 years of age in the history of the sport.

“It was definitely worth it, and it was sweet revenge,” said Hopkins, 45, an ex-con from Philadelphia. “It was really rough in there. He’s a good fighter, and he tried to rough me up. I tried to tough it out, but I was seeing spots from the sixth round on.”

World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre “The Beast” Berto will make his fourth title defense against Carlos Quintana Saturday at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

Berto (26-0, 19 KOs), a two-time National Golden Gloves winner who captured 22 state titles in Florida, was scheduled to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley this past Jan. 30.

Sadly, Berto decided to withdraw 10 days before the bout was to occur after eight members of his family were killed in the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12.

“As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted and therefore I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout,” said Berto, 26, when he announced the cancelation of his match versus Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs).

WBA heavyweight champion David “The Hayemaker” Haye and legendary pugilist Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins both emerged victorious in their respective bouts this past Saturday.

Haye (24-1, 22 KOs), only the fifth British pugilist in history to win a piece of the heavyweight title, successfully defended his crown against Methuen’s John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KOs) by a ninth round TKO at the MEN Arena.

Conversely, Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOS), the oldest man to ever hold the middleweight crown in professional boxing, badly outclassed Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40 KOs) by a unanimous decision to triumph at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Haye, 29, who held the WBA, WBC and The Ring Magazine cruiserweight titles before he vacated them to instead compete in boxing’s glamour division, has adamantly stated that he wants to emulate Evander Holyfield and seamlessly transition into the heavyweight ranks.

Dontrelle Willis and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Royals 7-3 Thursday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

Willis, who made his first start since last June when he was placed on the disabled list due to social anxiety, pitched six innings and surrendered only two earned runs.

Willis’ solid outing is tremendously encouraging for the Tigers who have seen the “D-Train” struggle mightily ever since they acquired him in December 2007 from the Florida Marlins.

The two-time All-Star selection and 2003 National League Rookie of the Year Award winner is viewed by many onlookers as a spent oddball who will never recapture the brilliance he once displayed on the hill.

Fortunately, Willis has apparently not listened to his  critics and he seems destined to be a vital cog in the Tigers rotation this season.

WBC welterweight champion Andre “The Beast” Berto defeated “El Indio” Carlos Quintana by an eighth round knockout to successfully defend his crown Saturday at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

“My knockout was pretty vicious,” said Berto, 26. “It may open up their eyes a little bit. But then again they have to look at I’ve been off for a long time so it’s only going to get better from here.”

Berto (27-0, 20 KOs), a two-time National Golden Gloves winner who captured 22 state titles in Florida, was scheduled to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley this past January 30.

Sadly, Berto decided to withdraw 10 days before the bout were to occur after eight members of his family were killed in the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12.

Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield defeated Francois Botha by eight round knockout  to capture the lightly-regarded WBF heavyweight title Saturday at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs), the only boxer to ever win the heavyweight title on five occasions, is still adamant that he will again become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

“I’m going to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,” said Holyfield, 47, an alleged steroid abuser who was recently cited for domestic abuse. “George Foreman said, ‘It’s not about the age. He became heavyweight champion of the world.’”

Botha (47-6-3, 28 KOs)claimed he is not ashamed that he lost to a geezer like Holyfield and he lauded the spent “Warrior’s” abilities in the ring.

Former WBC world light heavyweight champion Tomasz “Granite Chin” Adamek will fight Chris “Nightmare” Arreola April 24 at the Ontario Community Events Center in Ontario, CA.

Adamek (40-1, 27 KOs) declared yesterday that he will dedicate his bout versus Arreola (28-1, 25 KOs) to those killed in Saturday’s plane crash near Smolensk airport in western Russia.

The President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, and dozens of political, military and religious leaders perished in this weekend’s tragedy.

“Fate took friends, people who I always admired,” said Adamek, 33, who was born in Zywiec, Poland.

“Many people so important for my home country – their families need us. They need compassion as they grieve. There’s not much I can do, but I would like to dedicate my upcoming fight to all of those who perished Saturday morning and all those left grieving. Poles living in America and my American friends have been calling me, saying words of sympathy because they know that I’m Polish. Today, in the United States of America, we are all Polish.”

Legendary basketball superstar Charles Barkley justifiably criticized the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club this week for negative comments he made about Tiger Woods and his serial philandering immediately prior to The Masters Tournament

“It is simply not the degree of his conduct that is so egregious here,” said Billy Payne, who replaced Hootie Johnson as Augusta’s presiding officer in 2006. “It is the fact that he disappointed all of us, and more importantly, our kids and grandkids. Our hero did not live up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children.”

Payne continued when a reporter asked him if Woods could potentially redeem himself.

“Is there a way forward? I hope yes. I think yes. But certainly, his future will never again be measured only by his performance against par, but measured by the sincerity of his efforts to change. I hope he realizes that every kid he passes on the course wants his swing but would settle for his smile.”

Former world heavyweight champion Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs defeated Rafael Pedro by a one-punch knockout a mere 28 seconds into their bout Tuesday night in Hollywood, Florida.

“That’s all I needed,” said Briggs, 38, a Brooklyn native who once was considered a major boxing prospect in the mid-1990s. “It was a fast night for me but that’s how a lot of my fights end.”

Briggs’ (49-5-1, 43 KOs) victory over Pedro (20-9-1, 14 KOs) was the 28th time he has trumped one of his opponents in the first round.

Briggs, a New York Golden Gloves champion, was a legitimate pugilist in his prime.

Unfortunately, the previously chiseled Briggs now weighs a doughy 263 Lbs and he needs to retire from prizefighting before he gets seriously injured in the ring.

IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine heavyweight champion Wladimir “Dr. Steelhammer” Klitschko Tuesday called WBA heavyweight titlist David “The Hayemaker” Haye a coward who is scared to fight him.

“I want to send this message to boxing fans and directly to David Haye,” said Klitschko, 34, who was last defeated by Lamon Brewster in April 2004. “David you bitched out on fighting both Klitschko brothers twice already and now’s the time to make it happen. On behalf of boxing fans all over the world, I‘m officially calling you out to fight me. You can’t run away from me forever if you want to be respected. I’m ready. What’re you waiting for?”

Haye (24-1, 22 KOs) recently incensed Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) when he donned a T–shirt to a press conference that depicted him holding the decapitated heads of the Klitschko brothers.

Former WBC lightweight champion “El Terminator” Edwin Valero committed suicide in his Venezuelan prison cell earlier this morning a day after he was accused of murdering his wife.

Venezuelan authorities revealed that Valero (27-0, 27 KOs) admitted that he killed his wife, Jennifer Viera, in a hotel in Valencia and he was arrested on Sunday.

Venezuelan Federal Police Chief Wilmer Flores  told reporters that “El Terminator” used his clothes to hang himself to death at a police lockup in north-central Carabobo state.

“A classic case of addition by subtraction,” said Quincy resident Mike Cardello, 29. “Valero is subhuman.”

Just last month, Valero, a southpaw who once established a world record by winning his first 18 prizefights by first round knockout, was forced by court orders to seek help after he was taken into custody on charges that he harassed his wife and threatened medical personnel who treated her in a hospital.

Former WBC, WBO and The Ring Magazine middleweight champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik relinquished his belts to WBC super welterweight titlist Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez by a resounding unanimous decision loss Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs) badly bludgeoned Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs) early in the bout and his extreme quickness never enabled “The Ghost” an opportunity to land a steady barrage of punches.

“I’ve never promoted anybody with this kind of athleticism before,” said Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella, a graduate of Tufts University and Harvard Law School. “This guy is a different kind of fighter. He does some things that make me think of Roy Jones when he was young.”

25 years ago last week, Marvelous Marvin Hagler savagely defeated Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns by a third round TKO at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

When the bout was officially signed, Hagler (62-3-2, 52 KOs) and Hearns (48-5-1, 48 KOs) were widely regarded as two of the preeminent boxers in the entire sport.

Hagler, who was raised in Brockton, MA, was a menacing man who easily managed to intimidate his opponents both inside and outside of the ring.

In preparation for a prizefight, Hagler was known to isolate himself on Cape Cod in vacated motels during the winter months to maximize his focus and training efforts.

As part of his training regimen on “the Cape,” Hagler would run backwards in heavy army boots to better ready himself for his movements in the ring.

After Valero defeated Mexico’s Antonio DeMarco (23-2-1, 17 KOs) by a ninth round TKO in February in Monterrey, his name was mentioned as a potential future opponent for Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs).

Former two-time WBA world heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz announced his retirement from boxing Monday.

Ruiz (44-9-1-1, 30 KOs), the first Latino heavyweight titlist ever, fought his last fight earlier this month in a ninth round TKO loss to current WBA champ David “The Hayemaker” Haye (24-1, 22KOs).

Ruiz, 38, a native of Methuen who later moved to Las Vegas, was a capable fighter who defeated three champions in his 18-year career, including Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs).

Nevertheless, his defensive and controversial “grab and clinch” fighting style made him an extremely unpopular fighter on a national level.

Despite his uninspiring tactics in the ring, Ruiz is a good man and a true gentleman in a sport engulfed with corrupt scumbags.

Tomasz “Granite Chin” Adamek defeated Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola by a majority decision Saturday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA.

Despite surrendering a staggering 33.5 pounds to Arreola (28-2, 25 KOs), Adamek (41-1, 27 KOs) managed to withstand “The Nightmare’s” powerful blows and he utilized quick combinations to win the bulk of the rounds.

“This was the toughest fight I ever fought,” said Adamek, 33, who dedicated his victory to those who perished April 10 in the plane crash near Smolensk airport in western Russia. “This is why I believe I can be a world champion.”

Adamek, a former WBC world light heavyweight titlist and past IBF, IBO and The Ring magazine cruiserweight champion, firmly believes that he can trump WBA world heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KOs) and one, or both, of the Klitschko brother’s to capture additional crowns.

WBA welterweight super champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley will battle undefeated “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“He may be the champ, but we all know belts don’t do nothing but collect dust,” said Mayweather, 33, the winner of six world boxing championships in five different weight classes. “I’m in the check-cashing business, baby.”

Mayweather, who captured the bronze medal as a featherweight at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, had an opportunity to really be “in the cash-checking business, baby.”

A scrap between “Pretty Boy” and Ring Magazine’s number one pound-for-pound boxer, Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), would have generated unprecedented riches.
