The Magical Mustaches sounds a lot like a band name, but it's a tactic that I'm betting more of the Yankees will be employing in the next few days. I don't see Jeter doing it, but Giambi's mustache turned around his slump in a hurry, and Johnny Damon's doesn't seem to be hurting him much either (he's batting something like .310 since he grew it).

On a team where facial hair other than a 'stache is forbidden, this may be the Yankees' mini-version of a playoff beard. We all know they'll need a rally to get anywhere near an acceptable record before the end of the season, so what better source of inspiration than a little extra fuzz under the nose?

I predict we could see some stubble on Shelley Duncan and maybe Joba (can he even grow a mustache?). But I hope Jeter and ARod don't stay away from the razor; they're too pretty for facial hair. I nominate Mariano Rivera as the Mustache Leader for the pitchers... Maybe we'll have to bring back Sal Fasano to make it official.

Continue reading "The Yankees Magical Mustaches"

We're all already on a first-name basis with him... so will Joba Chamberlain be the starter to take us back to .500 tonight and get the season on the right track?

The Yankees are off to a horrifying 28-29 start, with key players injured (Posada) and others suspended (Hawkins). Luckily, Toronto isn't particularly good at hitting first-time starters, and the Yankees seem to be faring well with a recent record of 14 for 20. And even though Joba can't throw 99 mph for seven innings, he's a pitcher with the presence of mind to get himself through his first 60-70 pitches as a starter (which is how many Girardi said he'd allow the near-rookie to throw).

On an even more positive note, we have the news that David Ortiz is down and out, at least for a while. And though I wouldn't wish pain on anyone, the idea of Big Papi's wrist being immobilized for the next month isn't exactly bringing me down either. The Red Sox may get far, but they cannot win without the big Shrek-looking slugger.

Continue reading "Is Joba the Answer And Big Papis Out"
