Well we can put another notch in Phil Hughes’ cap. 82 pitches thrown in 3.2 IP, which by the way is his average innings pitched per start. He is lost right now and unless the Yankees get some sort of help in the form of a starter that can eat up innings, you may want to buy stock in whatever company is in charge of transporting pitchers from Scranton-Wilkes Barre to the Bronx.
Gary Sheffield’s home run off of Hughes in the 3rd inning was just salt in the wound and leaving bases loaded opportunities in both the 3rd and 7th inning made it an all around ugly loss.
THE GOOD:
Robinson Cano’s 2 run home run…If Robby can get back on track and hit like he is capable of, the Yankee lineup looks completely different. Although leaving a ton of runners in scoring position later on in the game kind of adds a sour note to his spot in the box score.
The bullpen…Ross Ohlendorf, Edwar Ramirez and Latroy Hawkins?? pitched very well and held the deficit to keep the Yankees in the game.
THE BAD:
Saving most of Phil Hughes for the Ugly…Chris Stewart and Phil Hughes…There are batteries in Little League that look better than those two did. Countless mixed up signals didn’t help Hughes’ cause tonight.
A-Rod's quad must be a bit more than tweaked if he couldn't pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth. Wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't come back until the weekend.THE UGLY:
Phil Hughes…No surprise here. Michael Kay said it best, (and you will learn quickly I don’t always agree with what he has to say) when are we going to stop using his age as an excuse?
A LOOK AHEAD:
Well here we go again, Andy Pettitte pitching in another game after a Yankee loss. He opposes Jeremy Bonderman who has not had a spectacular start to the season himself.
SOME OBSERVATIONS:
TIGERS:
- Placido Polanco (4 for 5 tonight) is starting to heat up.
- Curtis Granderson is awesome.
- Miguel Cabrera is still lazy.
- Danny Bautista needs to keep his shirt (or robe?) tucked in.
YANKEES:
- Don’t get base runners in scoring position, the bats just shut down when there are.
- Shelley Duncan looks a bit more disciplined at the plate…must hate it in Scranton
- Melky Cabrera is how old? AND HE NEEDS A DAY OFF?!?!!
- Four straight complete games for Roy Halladay and he has taken the loss in 3 of them. Wow.
- The Orioles won a very important battle of the first place teams in the AL East over the Rays.
- The Mets bullpen and for tonight at least, Jose Reyes’ defense continues to give our “friends,” their fans indigestion.
- MLB TV is a great thing to get if you can’t fall asleep at night and there are west coast games on.
- As of this post, Brewers OF, Corey Hart is a Home Run shy of the cycle
