Brett Favre

27 September 2009

Tough one for the Texans and their faithful.

-Brett Favre continued to amaze the rest of the public (I sit on the sidelines and shake my head at him) by adding to his legend with a last-second game-winning heave to Greg Lewis. Favre displayed incredible arm strength -- something he rarely did last season with my Jets -- firing the ball deep down the field under intense pressure. Lewis did an outstanding job maintaining his footwork and coming down with the backbreaking reception. If the Texans' fans had a rough day today, the 49er faithful suffered through the Apocalypse.

And I thought the playoffs got harder as they progressed.

Brett Favre needs to stay out of the news. That's all I have to say about that. Do you not have a family? They're starved for

He was quickly disregarded as trash when the golden icon Brett Favre donned the green and white.

Understandable?

Yes.

Good for the Jets?

Yes.

Surprise,

Also good for Pennington and the Dolphins.

y is absent from the starting Patriots.  I can put this to bed with one simple statement: even Brett Favre said that this is a hasty call to make.  If the starting quarterback for the team (who just happens to be an NFL legend) says that there is a lot to accomplish before the Jets become the team to beat in the AFC East, it might as well come from God himself.  Let's look at things from a different angle.  In week one, the Jets won and began their season on a good note.  Do not be fooled by this though, as the Jets beat the worst team in the AFC East and perhaps the entire conference in the Miami Dolphins.  Before you say it Dolphin's fans, I know you've made some good steps forward from last season, but when you go 1-15 is there really anywhere to go but up?  The bottom line is, the Jets narrowly beat a broken team for their first win.  I will admit that the Favre-Cotchery connection looked good for a long touchdown and a potential season long deep threat, but I still see a lot of weakness on a team that edged out Miami.  Do not get too excited too early Jets fans, this one is not yours just yet.

7 September 2008

On a day when Brett Farve looked damn good in a Jets' uniform, Tom Brady may have torn his ACL, a Kyle Orton-led Chicago Bears team crushed the Colts, Kurt Warner led the Cardinals to a win, Donovon McNabb threw for 361 yards in an easy Eagles' win, and the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills looked dominant, the Jacksonville Jaguar's preseason sluggishness was confirmed in a troubling 17-10 loss to its division rival and nemesis-in-the-making, Tennessee Titans. It was the second straight season Tennessee handed Jacksonville a season-opening loss. The effort came after former Broncos all-pro Tight End Shannon Sharp predicted the Jags would win the Super Bowl this year. Though an opening loss is no reason to panic, much work is left to be done and gaps left to be filled.

Despite the fact that Brett Favre's arrival in New York instantly makes the Jets a better team and makes them relevant, at least for a few days, it does come at a considerable price. No, I'm not talking about the conditional draft pick the team gave up to get Favre, which is fair compensation for a future Hall-of-Famer. Rather, I'm talking about the release of incumbant quarterback Chad Pennington.

31 July 2008

A week ago I posted that I thought the Jets had no shot of getting Brett Favre. Well a lot has changed in a week, as now the Jets are apparently one of two teams given permission to speak with Favre. The Jets have not yet done so, but they have talked to his agent Bus Cook and seem to be holding out in case the Packers drop their asking price. I agree with this strategy, as I would not give up a first or second round draft pick (which Green Bay is asking for) for a player who may only play for a year or two more. But if Green Bay gets so desperate that they are willing to accept a third round pick, even a conditional one that can become a second rounder if Favre leads the Jets to the playoffs, I would pull the trigger.

Of course the main issue as the Jets start training camp this week is who should be the starting quarterback- veteran Chad Pennington, youngster Kellen Clemens, or maybe even a certain former Packer who is coming out of retirement. I actually think Favre could be a good fit for this team, as Clemens could learn behind someone with Super Bowls on his resume and who has comparable arm strength. It would be a distraction, but that didn't really hurt the Packers last year, did it? But it is a moot point, since there is no way Favre would come to a team that was 4-12 last year and has to compete with the Patriots, Colts, and Chargers just to get to the Super Bowl.

offices to put their fate in once great, but now flawed men of unimaginative power over their fans. Brett Favre draws the people, and is great...but he no longer represents the future.

So let's see Favre in purple and gold, or Tampa Bay orange. Let's get a Rodgers-Favre showdown of the Bears in Lambeau. Let's enjoy the awkwardness of an old

y he has hit that season and if it helped the Yankees win.  That is why I will not worry where Brett Favre ranks among the best quarterbacks in NFL history.  No, I will just remember the career of Brett because whether you think he is better than John Elway or not you must admit, he was special.

"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a voice mail message.
