Girardi

11 May 2009

Behind the plate was Joe Girardi and Jim Leyritz both splitting time, grooming a young catcher by the name of Jorge Posada.  In the pen were guys like Jeff Nelson and Bob Wickman. Ramiro Mendoza made spot starts and came in for long relief.  The Closer? John Wetteland (43 saves) occasionally the set up man would come in and earn a save, a position Mariano Rivera would become famous for in later years. And at shortstop was a rookie named Jeter.  A rare breed, with expectations that warranted one of two single digit jerseys available in the Yankee clubhouse, the other went to the new skipper, Mr. Joe Torre.

ing a tired Sox bullpen, now it is rested and ready for the last 3 games of the series.

Hopefully Girardi's message worked and we will see changes today. The teams effort had better be 200% for the rest of the series and till the allstar break. They cannot keep up this kind of play. Maybe last night was rock bottom, or maybe it was the begining of the taking on water and realizing that they cant get rid of it all. Is the ship sinking? It might be soon, they are already 7 games in the loss column behind the Rays and digging a bigger hole everyday. The matchups dont look great for the rest of the series as Beckett faces Rasner today, I'll chalk that up to the Sox, Moose vs Masterson, I would say even due to Mussina's struggles vs Boston and the Sox young pitchers actually win games, and finally Wakefield vs Chamberlain, slight edge Yankees but Chamberlain might be too amped up for a Sunday night game vs Boston with the season on the line.

Maybe Girardi should read that vs reading Baseball Prospectus. Sure knowing stats are good but so is making good baseball plays. If you are going to let Melky hit and not bunt, then put up jeter, at least he has a real chance of getting a hit. And if he doesnt get a hit, we fans can live with it: ITS DEREK JETER NOT MELKY CABRERA.

The Yankees should send Willie Randolph a nice little present.  If it wasn't for him taking so much heat in the papers and all over the internet about some of his comments, the Yankees and their terrible play would be front and center.
