Hideki Matsui

All this did was spark a 7-run rally in the 4th inning for the Yankees. That home run by Hideki Matsui put the nail in the coffin on another Yankee win to keep them 1 game up on the Red Sox in

Offensively and defensively, the Yankees have been missing the services of Hideki Matsui since June 27, and Jorge Posada on and off for even longer. Matsui is an integral RBI guy to give ARod and Giambi protection in the five or six hole, and is needed more than ever in left with Johnny Damon's shoulder issues. Posada can hit pretty well, but can't throw, so even when he was in the game, other teams ran rampant--Jose Molina and Chad Moeller are decent defensive replacements, but can't match Jorge's bat.

d and Posada already this season, just as they are currently without the services of clutch-hitting Hideki Matsui. And it’s hard to deny that Damon’s state of mind, determined to back up his strong words in private and public with passionate play, led to the injury. He rarely plays lackadaisically anyway, but he’s not like Ryan Freel, who throws himself around the diamond like he’s paid on a per-contusion basis.

After winning in dramatic fashion on Thursday afternoon on a walkoff two run homer by Jason Giambi, the Yankees hoped to take that momentum into tonight's game. Tonight wasn't the night as Royals rookie pitcher, Kyle Davies, pitched a gem, scattering only one run and seven hits over a well pitched 6 2/3 innings.  Davies earned the win as he rendered trhe Yankee bats quiet. Davies was called up from Triple A last Saturday. He proceeded to defeat the Indians' C.C Sabathia in snapping the Royals 12 game losing streak. Tonight he snapped the Royals 11 game road losing streak by mixing up his pitches, attacking the strike zone early and often and keeping the Yankees hitters off balanced and guessing.

eague.  Tonight, for a change, the Yankees were efficient in those situations as Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Melky Cabrera and Derek Jeter all contributed with run scoring singles. Wilson Betemit rounded out the scoring with a homer off of Jess Litsch.

rse, the first base sweepstakes is directly tied to the fortunes of two over-the-hill leftfielders, Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon.

As Yankee fans know, the Bombers' best-case scenario has Jason Giambi back in the lineup as a full-time first baseman, so Matsui and Damon can share time in left and at DH. All these guys are lefties, so there's no lefty/righty platoon involved. In fact, Damon is only a factor because he's presumably the team's best leadoff hitter.
