and the pen.  I don't remember it containing any superstars, do you?  I mean this was the New York Yankees, yet with Mattingly having retired, Henderson playing elsewhere, and Winfield long gone, who was the "big name, big time" bat in the lineup? Tartabull? Nope, Barfield? please.

I'm a Kobe fan. Huge Kobe fan. He's practically my generation's MJ. Nothing against MJ, I just never saw him play much. I went to the United Center once, when I was seven, and all I remember is Scottie Pippen's crew-cut and cotton candy. Also, I'm from D.C., so the fact that MJ ruined the entire development and chemistry of an up-and-coming Washington Wizards team, just so he could milk a little more limelight, doesn't really sit well.

Its late and I have a big day ahead of me with Fanfest and the All-Star Game but The Homerun Derby did a great job of getting this even off to a great start. The atmosphere and spectacle all lived up to and actually surpassed the hype. There was a lot of downtime but hey its in Yankee Stadium with the best fans in the world and your watching the best players in the world, things could be worse.

Wow what a game. In a typical Yankee-Red Sox fashion, tonights Sunday Night ESPN game was one to remember. It was a game that the Yankees probably don't win last month or even last week. Girardi's tyrade seems to have woken the team up and gotten them going. They kept fighting and clawing and finally found a way to win. Maybe it wasnt the prettiest game but it earned them a split, which is great after dropping the first two.

The Magical Mustaches sounds a lot like a band name, but it's a tactic that I'm betting more of the Yankees will be employing in the next few days.  I don't see Jeter doing it, but Giambi's mustache turned around his slump in a hurry, and Johnny Damon's doesn't seem to be hurting him much either (he's batting something like .310 since he grew it).

Kyle Farnsworth might be Brian Cashman's worst free agent signing, even more than Carl Pavano. At least Pavano had the excuse of injuries.

Joe Girardi's comments about Farnsworth is making him seem a bit silly.

We're all already on a first-name basis with him... so will Joba Chamberlain be the starter to take us back to .500 tonight and get the season on the right track?

The Yankees are off to a horrifying 28-29 start, with key players injured (Posada) and others suspended (Hawkins).  Luckily, Toronto isn't particularly good at hitting first-time starters, and the Yankees seem to be faring well with a recent record of 14 for 20.  And even though Joba can't throw 99 mph for seven innings, he's a pitcher with the presence of mind to get himself through his first 60-70 pitches as a starter (which is how many Girardi said he'd allow the near-rookie to throw).

I have to laugh when I hear that Brian Cashman will be in demand as a general manager if the Yankees don't sign him to a new contract beyond this season. Here's a guy who landed an job with the Yankees solely because his father was friends with George Steinbrenner; the two met while involved in the horse racing industry. So young Brian was able to land an internship that other just as, if not more, qualified college students can only dream about. Lots of people can make something of an opportunity; not everyone has it handed it to them like Cashman did. Many people could learn the ins and outs of how major league baseball operates, given the chance. I could have learned all about the waiver rules, too.

It seems that this year the The New York Yankees won't be sending more than 1 (maybe 2) players to the All Star game being held in Yankee Stadium. Johnny Damon had a stellar month in May, but can he keep it up? Alex Rodriguez went down and bounced back nicely. Derek Jeter has been up and down all year, and Jorge Posada is still out. With the All Star game only about a month away it will be intresting to see which

I'm a 24 year old from Brooklyn and a huge New York sports fan. I root for just about all the NY teams, except for the Islanders, and although I'm mostly a Yankees and Giants fan, I root for the Mets and Jets, too when they play other cities, I can't be a NY hater, I'm sorry. My timing for writing this couldn't be better. The Yankees get crushed again tonight, The Mets got killed, Rangers got killed again last night and they are pretty much done. Good Times in

effective use of their red zone opportunities and do a better job scoring touchdowns while limiting New York mostly to field goals, as they did to San Diego two weeks ago. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid we're looking at 19-0 here, folks.
