ashman and Steinbrenner have turned a blind eye at their one and only escape route.

I just traded Robinson Cano in my fantasy league. I'm already regretting it. So far, his 'roided-out numbers include: .381/5/16/.418/1.037. Yankees fans, is this for real? A young farm-hand making it in your starting line-up? Not only is he "making it," Cano leads the team so far in AVG, HR, and RBI. Well, he must be the only one. Actually, he's not. Let's check another, Melky Cabrera...surely he's not performing. Wait a minute...according to ESPN, Melky's hitting .325 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. That makes two Yankee farm-hands performing well enough to keep starting positions. Anyone else? Brett Gardner's not off to an all-star start, but he does have 5 steals and 3 doubles. Cashman, pay attention! Use your resources...don't trade them away.

ullpen and give Girdardi another dependable arm.

The big questions for final 70 games are: 1) Can Robinson Cano rebound to his all-star ways? Cano might be the most important player in the second half. The Yankees thought he would be a middle of an order type of hitter by now not a guy batting 230. He has shown signs he has his old beautiful swing back and the Yankees hope that is the case. Cano is not the only bat needed to get hot, Jeter is well below his averages as he is only hitting 280's and Bobby Abreu has slumped lately. They also need the 2007 A-Rod to reappear. His numbers look good but his 180 batting avg with RISP his not helping the team. They need him to carry the load the rest of the way. The Yankee bats should be able to carry a slumping Melky Cabrera and his solid defense.

After yesterday’s game, the Yankees held a closed-door meeting among coaches and players—reportedly, manager Joe Girardi spoke, followed by Johnny Damon and captain Derek Jeter. In a postgame news conference, Girardi repeatedly (and sometimes heatedly) refused to reveal what was said in the meeting, although the gist of the discussion was obvious: the can’t-lose Yankees have been losing.

Joba Chamberlain is getting more comfortable as a starting pitcher.  Last night, having a pitch count of 95, Chamberlain threw 88 pitches in six strong innings as he only gave up one run. Now, the training wheels are off for Chamberlain, no more pitch counts. Derek Jeter homered off of Doug Brocail in the 8th inning for the decisive margin.

After winning in dramatic fashion on Thursday afternoon on a walkoff two run homer by Jason Giambi, the Yankees hoped to take that momentum into tonight's game. Tonight wasn't the night as Royals rookie pitcher, Kyle Davies, pitched a gem, scattering only one run and seven hits over a well pitched 6 2/3 innings.  Davies earned the win as he rendered trhe Yankee bats quiet. Davies was called up from Triple A last Saturday. He proceeded to defeat the Indians' C.C Sabathia in snapping the Royals 12 game losing streak. Tonight he snapped the Royals 11 game road losing streak by mixing up his pitches, attacking the strike zone early and often and keeping the Yankees hitters off balanced and guessing.

After last night's disaster in Joba Chamberlain's first career start, things were back to normal tonight for the Yankees as they didn't have to deal with the media circus.

 Mike Mussina took the ball looking to get the Yankees back on track by ending their three-game losing streak.  He did so, pitching six effective innings and earning the win.  The win was number nine for Mussina, which ties him for the league lead. Mussina, whose loss of velocity has been well documented this season, kept the Bluejays hitters off balanced with an array of different offspeed pitches and a fastball which sported impressive late movement.  One night after Chamberlain went 2.1 innings in his first start, the Yankees were in need of a good start to give the bullpen a bit of a breather and Mussina provided that.
