my all time favorite Baseball story! The New York Yankees had won 107 games leading up to the 1932 World Series. This is how I heard the story: game 3, 5th inning with Babe Ruth at Bat.  The game was tied at 4 with 1 out.  Babe's count was 2-2.  Then he pointed his bat to center-field.  Root let the next pitch go and Babe sent it sailing over the center field wall of Wrigley's Field!

I was thinking back this afternoon as I watched the Yankees win there second game in what seems like a month.  I was thinking about that team in 96, thinking about the lineup, the rotation and the pen.  I don't remember it containing any superstars, do you?  I mean this was the New York Yankees, yet with Mattingly having retired, Henderson playing elsewhere, and Winfield long gone, who was the "big name, big time" bat in the lineup? Tartabull? Nope, Barfield? please.

More than simple offense, in the modern era of baseball, for a team to make the World Series it needs a home run threat.

Let me be clear, not a home run hitter, a home run threat. In the late innings of any game, with Mariano Rivera or Jonathon Paplebon on the mound, who plays Mighty Casey for the fans? Who on the Toronto Blue Jays makes you feel like the game is already over? Any player on the field can hit a home run, even David Eckstein gets his 3-5 a year. A home run threat is a player, who, at any time, in any situation, has the potential to either win, tie or make it a close game. Looking at the 2008 Blue Jays Roster, is there anyone on their roster give you that feeling?

Everyone's going green, why not include baseball, too?

4. Bring back day games for the World Series. Baseball's being lost to other sports, in part because kids don't watch the games (live or in person) the way they could when the games were in the daytime. Sure, ratings are higher at night, but how much does this affect ad revenue, really? And even if it does, sometimes you've gotta sacrifice the present for the future, instead of the other way around.

Over the past month or so I have taken the time to do some research on every team and break them down.  I pointed out their strengths and weaknesses, discussed which player or part of a team needs to have a big season to push that team to the next level and I made predictions on how every team in baseball would finish.  I talked about how each division would be won and why.  I took the time to look not just as each teams stars but the back end of their bullpen and their bench.  I know we are technically two games into the MLB season but with Opening Day being tomorrow (sorry Braves and Nationals) it is now time for me to tell you which teams will make the playoffs, who will win the awards, how the playoffs will shake up and which team, come October will be on top of the world.

Are the Rockies the real thing?

The Rockies miraculous run to the World Series was well publicized last year as they won 21 of 22 games before getting swept by the Red Sox in the Fall Classic. Many feel that they just got hot down the stretch and were a fluke team in 2007. That couldn’t be further from the truth and the Rockies will be contenders in 2008. The heart of the lineup that scored the second most runs in the National League last season returns with MVP candidate Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Brad Hawpe and Troy Tulowitzki. While anyone would expect a team in Colorado to score plenty of runs, it is always pitching that becomes the question. The Rockies’ pitching staff posted a very respectable 4.32 ERA last season, but what may be surprising to many, is that their road ERA was better than that of the vaunted San Diego pitching staff (4.29 to 4.42). With young fireballer Ubaldo Jiminez joining the rotation full time, a solid staff led by Jeff Francis becomes even better. Colorado may miss the playoffs this year due to a competitive division, but they will be one of the teams right there at the end battling for a berth.
