Here Goes Nothin'

I never thought I'd be part of the blogging community...journalism's ugly cousin. For my first blog EVER, let's talk current MLB standings. Assuming mostly NY fans will be reading this, is there anybody out there smirking when they scan over these low budget teams that are earning talking points on ESPN and other sports news? It's fun to see new blood leading the way, but in the back of your mind you figure it will be the same clubs gunning for the playoffs. So the question -- like every year -- is, "What teams are for real?"

I feel like the Orioles give the AL East a run for the first two weeks of the season every year. I look at that lineup and see only two guys who could potentially hit 25 homers this year -- Markakis and Millar (sorry Huff). Markakis is my bet to be the only Oriole, but we have to give Millar some credit while it's still April. With an inexperienced pitching staff -- and 'Wild Thing' Cabrera -- they will be in dead last come the All-Star break.

The next team that caught my eye is Oakland. They showcase an offense that is a tad more powerful than my old high school roster and is placing the season in the hands of a few young flame throwers and an injury prone closer and ace. Not only do I think they will not be able to compete, but they could contend for the most boring team to watch. The only way I'm tuning in is to see if I can notice Jack Cust close his eyes before every swing he takes.

The Marlins. If you play fantasy sports, or just watch highlights every now and then you know that Han Ram is a STUD. I don't care what the Marlins do the rest of the season, Hanley is a superstar overflowing with confidence. Before the season, he had no doubts on his team's talent and potential and smiled at reporters when he told them he'd see them in October. Well, Hanley, even if most reporters or sports fans don't believe you...I do! Call me crazy, but I'm buying into the Marlins and the roster of hungry players who still get carded going into rated R movies. Gregg seems capable of closing out games and the pitching seems to show improvement every outing. With help from Jacobs and Hermida and a division with some wiggle room...Marlins in the playoffs...you heard it here.
